The health risks associated with exposure to dust containing crystalline silica are well documented.  As a result, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) has created work site standards to protect workers from the dangers of long term Silica exposure.  If your company has not taken the steps to ensure the complete education of your internal safety standards, this is another opportunity to do so.

Larry Wright, Safety Director with Hensel Phelps Construction, has been a valuable resource to assisting in education and awareness of the new standards and what companies like theirs are doing to ensure their projects are meeting these standards.

Although this training will have an emphasis on how enforcement of this standard will affect the drywall, stucco, and cement industries, it will also review the overall standards and impacts to all levels and industries that support construction.

Topics will include:

  • Reason for new Silica Standard
  • What is Silica
  • What is Silicosis
  • How Silica Dust is generated
  • Understanding the elements of new Standard
  • Written Exposure Control Plan
  •  Competent Person
  • Exposure Control Options
  • Respiratory Protection
  • Housekeeping
  • Medical Surveillance
  • Communication of Silica Hazards
  • OSHA’s Table 1
